1. Tell us about your organization.
Geronimo Power develops and operates vital energy infrastructure projects that enhance grid reliability and deliver dependable domestic energy — strengthening local economies while powering America’s growth. Our farmer-founded values fuel a commitment to fair-deal business practices, and our end-to-end approach gives us the control to ensure we keep our promises — to our partners, landowners, and local communities.
2. What types of renewable energy does your organization focus on?
(Wind, solar, biofuels, hydrogen, storage, etc.) At Geronimo Power, we are committed to developing solar, wind, and energy storage projects that contribute to a cleaner energy grid. To date, we have over 2,000 MW of solar, 200 MW of onshore wind, and approximately 650 MW of energy storage either under construction or in operation.
3. What inspired your organization to get involved in renewable energy?
Our founder, Noel Rahn, grew up on a farm in southwest Minnesota. One day in 2003, Noel was approached by a wind developer about leasing his land. The developer didn’t handle himself well, and put off by this, Noel declined. Instead, Noel decided he would build a wind farm himself – and he did. This was the beginning of our story as Geronimo Power, and our firmly held values of being farmer-friendly and community-focused. Noel recognized early on the importance of working responsibly with landowners. Our personal connections to America’s farming communities give us respect for the land and a genuine understanding of what matters most to landowners.
4. What motivated you to become a member of SoDak Renewables?
SoDak Renewables shares the same core values of advancing the clean energy landscape while enhancing economic growth and job creation in South Dakota. Our job as developers is supported by SoDak Renewables' efforts to streamline permitting processes, advocate for fair tax incentives, and enhance transmission infrastructure to facilitate the integration of renewable resources into the grid. Therefore, being a member not only contributes to our collective goal of advancing renewable generation in the Midwest but also directly affects the quality and success of Geronimo Power’s new projects in the region.
5. What developments in South Dakota's renewable energy future are you most excited about?
South Dakota has already established itself as a national leader in renewable energy generation, with over 20% of its electricity generated from renewables in 2024. The team at Geronimo Power is eager to help expand that share of renewable generation even further in the coming years with projects in our development pipeline in South Dakota.
6. Can you share a recent project, partnership, or initiative that you're particularly proud of?
Our company recently announced the commencement of on-site construction at one of our newest projects, Portage — a 250-megawatt (MW) solar project located in Portage County, Wisconsin. The project is expected to generate over $70 million in economic impact for the local community over the next 20 years and create 300+ construction jobs. Portage Solar reflects our ongoing commitment to bolstering local economies, partnering with landowners, and expanding our generation portfolio while investing directly in project communities.
